Healthy Snacks for Kids

The keys to healthy eating are variety, balance and moderation, according to Felicia D. Stoler, DCN, MS, RD, host of The Learning Channel's popular show, "Honey We're Killing the Kids".

"Be sure your family eats a variety of foods every day and try to go easy on the salt, sugar and saturated fat," says Stoler. "Try to incorporate two to four nutritious, easy-to-eat snacks into daily meal plans, including fresh fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy and whole-grain products. One of my favorites is tasty, fresh Florida citrus."

These fruits are some of the juiciest available and each medium-sized variety is packed with many important vitamins and antioxidants necessary for your family's health. Plus, they are easy to transport, require little preparation and don't need to be refrigerated, perfect for families always on the go. It's easy to pick out Florida citrus varieties in grocery stores because the sunshine state's natural elements cause the skin to have slight blemishes and spots, which have no bearing on the ripeness or flavor of the fruit.

Here are some of Felicia's ideas on how to use fresh Florida citrus to make snack time fun for you and your kids:

Citrus Wheels

1. Slice fruit as many times as needed to create desired width.

2. Cut away a small section of rind in a straight line from each slice.

3. Rotate slices while cutting off rind six times to complete each Florida Citrus Wheel.

Citrus Smiles

1. Slice fruit in half as shown (do not cut through stem end).

2. Hold one half and slice diagonally to get three to four "smiles".

3. Repeat with other half as shown. It's so easy!
